Store Donations

Our students have been responsible, respectful and doing exactly what they need to do! We are so pleased! The only bad (good) thing is that we are always giving eagle coins to our wonderful students and students make it to store so often we are running out of prizes. Raid your closets and toy boxes and any old toys you would like to get rid of we would love to have them for store. Our students look forward to store each week! Thanks for all of the donations so far, the students really love them.

PT Conferences

Don't forget to register for a PT Conference time on the Silver Mesa School website. If you have any trouble signing up for a time contact the school and we can help you. We look forward to celebrating all that your children have done so far this year.

100 Day

TOMORROW is 100 DAY!!! Students took home a green note explaining that they will need 100 small goodies. They should be counted at home to be exactly 100 and put into a small baggie. They shouldn't be bigger than miniature marshmallows. Some suggestions are: Cherrios, raisins, M&Ms (with no peanuts) etc. The children will be counting, grouping, and sharing their treats with other children in their class. This is a voluntary donation, and all children will be allowed to participate, even if they forget to bring something!

February Math Box Homework

We have been studying Place Value and Numbers to 100. Another name for 23 is 2 tens and 3 ones. If we are adding two double digit numbers in this form, we usually add the ones together first and then the tens. We are also working on adding money together. It is tricky and it comes with lots of practice handling real coins.

1. Use the HUNDREDS BOARD, and find a partner. Use a BUTTON as a marker. Use the 2 sets of 0-10 NUMBER CARDS. Start at 1 and draw a card from the pile. Go forward that many spaces. If you get a 3, you move 3 and then you get another turn. If you get a 5, you have to go back 5 spaces. First one to 100 is the winner.
2. Use a HUNDRED BOARD & BEANS. Skip count to 100 by 3’s. Put a bean on every third space (multiples of 3). As you take them off, say all the numbers beginning with the number 3.

3. Fold a paper in half. Write ONES at the top of the right side and TENS at the top of the left side. Use the 10 PORTION CUPS and 100 BEANS and a DICE (or use 1-6 number cards in a cup). Roll the dice and count that many beans onto the ONES side. Keep rolling and adding until you get to 100. (Variation: Partner game: race to 50 with each player having a paper and 5 portion cups.)

4. Count by 5’s, 10’s and 25’s to 100. Parent can name any double digit number and see if you can count on from that number (25…….26, 27, 28, 29, 30, etc.) Do it with several different numbers. Look at the HUNDREDS BOARD if you need help.

5. Review the names of the coins. How much is each one worth? Estimate how is in a group of coins at home.

6. Save some cans and boxes for a little store. Write on it with a marker a small price like 2 cents, 3 cents, 4 cents, etc. Pick two items and add them. Do it several times.

7. Ask to borrow several pennies, nickels, dimes and one quarter. Write on some slips of paper these amounts: 5 cent, 8 cents, 12 cents, 15 cents, 18 cents, 20 cents, 25 cents, 30 cents, 35 cents, 40 cents, 45 cents. As you draw the amounts, try to pick the coins to show that amount. Ask if there is another way to make that amount. This activity can be repeated throughout the month.

8. Point to any number on the HUNDREDS CHART. Keep your finger on that number. With the other hand, point to the number you would go to if you added 3 to that number. Which direction did you go? Now which number would you go to if you subtracted 3 from the original number? Do several.
9. Point to a number on the HUNDREDS CHART. Give two or three directions (down 1, right 2, up 3, etc.) See if you can follow the directions to the right squares on the chart.
10. Say some 3 digit numbers like 135 or 467. Using both sets of NUMBER CARDS, show that number and put it in the right order. Say how many hundreds, tens and ones. Do several.
11. Estimate how many BEANS you can pick up in a teaspoon. Count into portion cups (tens/ones).

12. Look through a newspaper for two digit numbers. Find and read 20 of them.
13. Look at the comics in a newspaper. Find a word bubble that has about 10-12 words in it. Circle the letters in the word bubble in groups of 10 until there are fewer than 10 letters left.
14. Write two numbers on the CHALKBOARD between 10 and 99. Tell which number is greater and which number is less. Do this several times.
15. This activity is practice in ordinal numbers (first, second, third, etc. ) Get a paper and some crayons. Draw a picture in ten steps (First, draw a cloud, second, draw a tree, etc.).
16. Number some papers from 1-10. Spread them out in a line on the floor. Jump to the even numbers as you count by 2s. Now jump on the odd numbers as you count back.
17. Write down on your CHALKBOARD an amount of money from 5 cents to 25 cents using the cent sign. Use some nickels and pennies to count out the coins necessary to make each number. Start with nickels and use pennies as necessary.
18. Make little price tags out of paper and show these amounts: 20 cents, 25 cents, 30 cents, 35 cents, 40 cents, and 45 cents. Mix up the price tags and put them in order from least to greatest. Then, starting with the 20 cent tag, count out each amount with nickels and dimes.
19. Place 3 dimes, 4 nickels, and 9 pennies on a table. Take turns with a partner rolling a number cube and collecting pennies for the amount shown on the cube. When a player has collected five pennies, he or she should trade them for a nickel. When a player has two nickels, he or she should trade them for a dime. The first player to get two dimes wins.

20. Use two dimes, 5 nickels, 25 pennies and a quarter. Put the coins into different groups to make 25 cents. Then trade them for a quarter each time.

21. Get 99 cents worth of change and several cans or boxes of food. Label them with different amounts under 99 cents. Count the amount of coins to buy each food item.

22. Get a little cup full of pennies, nickels, and dimes. Estimate how much money you can scoop up with a spoon. Write your estimate on your CHALKBOARD. Then line up the pennies, line up the nickels and line up the dimes to form a graph. Then count the coins starting with the dimes, nickels and lastly, the pennies. Try a few times.

23. Do you have bank to save coins? Count all your money. Start with the largest amounts first and then work down to the pennies last.

Candy Grams and Valentines

A list of student names will be coming home this week for Valentines. Students can start bringing Valentines any day next week (please before Friday). We will have our Valentine Bags set up in our rooms (Day-Blue, Maiava-Red). Our Valentine celebration will be on Feb. 11th because there is no school on Feb. 14th (furlough day).

Candygrams will be sold in the lunchroom from Feb. 3-9. They cost $.25. Students can send them to anyone in the school. They are optional to buy, we have them because we aren't able to deliver Valentines from home to our friends in other grades/classes. Thanks for supporting student council.

Spelling Challenge Lists

We've had 10 weeks of spelling now and we're ready for some accelerated words for some students. From now on, we will have a pretest on the first day of the week on the new spelling words. If your child passes the test, he or she can choose a "challenge list" to work on throughout the week and be tested o those words on Friday. (On my records, they would have 100% for the regular list.) If you child is on the challenge list. I will send a little paper home with the new words on it on Monday or Tuesday. All students will do the same sentence dictation on the test day with words from the original list. (I grade for capitalization and punctuation.) Please don't put extra pressure on your child to make it to the "challenge list." It's okay to make mistakes. Many students get 100% on the test now and if someone knows the words at the first of the week, I don't think they still need to practice them all week. (I keep it very low-key about the two lists and who are on them.) I will put both lists on the blog on Monday after we have had the pretest.
